General Definition of Work
The teacher, elementary orchestra, under moderate supervision, performs instructional work with limited decision‑making discretion related to instructing classes in music, band, or orchestra and assists students in the development of instrumental techniques and music reading. Employee performs school‑based work to carry out Board of Education policies under the direction of the principal.
Essential Functions- Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures.
- Assist school administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct, develop reasonable rules of classroom behavior, and maintain order in a fair and just manner.
- Establish and maintain an orderly and supportive classroom environment in which students are engaged.
- Create a culture of effectiveness by setting high standards and expectations for all students.
- Plan and implement a program of study in music that meets the needs, interests, and abilities of assigned students, aligning instruction with the NC Essential Standards for Music and ensuring a sequential course of study.
- Utilize a variety of methods and adapt music instruction to benefit all students.
- Integrate appropriate music technologies into instruction.
- Incorporate a variety of methods to assess and analyze student work and what they have learned.
- Utilize a grading system that is consistent, fair, and supported by the school/district.
- Collaborate with other arts staff and assist classroom teachers in arts integration, alignment, and cross‑coordination of the curriculum.
- Maintain an accurate inventory of musical equipment and ensure all instruments are in playing condition.
- Maintain necessary forms and records for instrumental music study.
- Self‑initiate opportunities for personal professional development and growth.
- Communicate program needs to principal and collaborate with principals, colleagues, and feeder school music staff to ensure continuity in enrollment and program continuation.
- Seek out alternative funding sources to supplement program needs and may coordinate field trips.
- Perform related work as assigned or required.
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulatory requirements, county and school board policies, Common Core, NC Essential Standards, and the North Carolina Testing Program.
- Knowledge of the principles, standards, and expectations of elementary music curriculum and effective instructional strategies.
- Skilled in communication, both verbal and written, and in computers and software including Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
- Ability to learn and use specialized tools, equipment or software related to business needs, employ positive communication skills, problem‑solve using sound judgment, maintain confidentiality, take initiative, work independently, and exercise sound judgment.
- Ability to recognize the various ways in which learning takes place and know appropriate levels of intellectual and social development of students.
- Ability to work effectively in a deadline‑driven, rapidly changing team environment.
- Bachelor's Degree in Music Education.
- Master's Degree in Performance or Music Education preferred.
- Valid NC teaching license in assigned area.
- Equivalent combination of education and experience.
Certified Schedule/Full‑time, 10 months.
Reports toPrincipal.
