As a valued member of our team, you will play an essential role in advancing CDM Smith's mission by:

  • Leveraging technical skills to design hydraulic systems for transportation projects ranging from urban thoroughfares to rural roads.
  • Amplifying the department’s reach through active marketing and project pursuit.
  • Working under seasoned Project Managers to lead task teams in roadway hydraulic component design.
  • Handling complex technical challenges with autonomy.
  • Nurturing junior colleagues and sharing expertise.
  • Steering engineers and technicians to ensure project success.
  • Collaborating across disciplines for collective goal attainment.
Responsibilities
  • Design hydraulic systems for transportation projects including ditches, culverts, storm sewer systems, outfall analysis, and drainage investigations.
  • Apply FHWA guidelines (e.g., Hydraulic Design Series 5,
    7) to bridge and culvert hydraulic design over streams.
  • Design and permit stormwater systems for rural, urban, and limited‑access roadways.
  • Utilize Microstation CADD, Geopak Drainage Software, HY8, HECRAS, HEC‑1, HECHMS, ARCGIS, and Open Roads Designer.
  • Adhere to NCDOT design standards.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Transportation, or Structural Engineering (or related discipline).
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • 12 years of related experience or equivalent directly related experience.
  • Domestic and/or international travel may be required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in roadway hydraulic design, including ditches, small pipe culverts, storm sewer systems, outfall analysis, and drainage investigations.
  • Experience with bridge and/or culvert hydraulic design over streams using FHWA design guidelines.
  • Experience designing and permitting stormwater systems for roadways of various types.
  • Proficiency with Microstation CADD and Geopak Drainage Software, HY8, HECRAS, HEC‑1, HECHMS, ARCGIS, and Open Roads Designer.
  • Familiarity with NCDOT design standards.
