Material/Process Engineer - Level 2

Northrop Grumman’s Space Sector is seeking a Material and Process Engineer – Level 2 to join our team in Charlotte, NC. This position is 100% onsite and cannot accommodate telecommute work.

SYNOPTICS is the world‑wide leader in the growth, fabrication, and coating of crystalline materials used in laser systems. The Charlotte facility has been operating for over 40 years and provides the highest quality products with timely deliveries. Solid‑state oxide and fluoride crystals are grown from a high‑temperature melt and are used in products ranging from medical lasers to military laser systems.

• Develop crystal growth processes for materials new to SYNOPTICS.
• Work with manufacturing personnel to develop, improve, document, and transition new processes to manufacturing.
• Develop a thorough understanding of the current crystal growth techniques at SYNOPTICS.
• Perform sustaining engineering duties, including data collection, process control, designed experiments, process documentation, and operator training.
• Write documentation for new processes and process improvements.
• Participate in process improvement projects as a team member or lead and provide technical training for manufacturing employees (some shift flexibility may be required).
• Participate in developing new business opportunities, which may include responding to government solicitations and attending or presenting at technical conferences.

• Bachelor’s degree with 2 years of professional experience – OR – Master’s degree with 0 years of professional experience.
• No clearance required to start.
• Experience in crystal growth or materials processing and synthesis, with specific knowledge of solidification principles, intrinsic growth defect formation, phase diagrams, and solid‑liquid chemistry of oxide systems.
• Strong grasp of engineering principles.
• Knowledge of Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing techniques is beneficial.
• Self‑starter with excellent analytical, verbal, and written communication skills.

• Experience in solid‑state crystal growth.
• Master’s Degree or PhD preferred.

Primary Level Salary Range: $79,600.00 – $. Northrop Grumman may offer overtime, shift differential, discretionary bonuses, and other incentives. Benefits include health insurance, life and disability insurance, savings plan, company‑paid holidays, and paid time off.
