Primary Purpose of Department: The primary mission of Police and Public Safety is to provide a safe and secure environment supporting the University's pursuit of research and academic excellence. Our law‑enforcement professionals continually strive to reduce crime, accidents, and loss of property through investigative processes and effective community partnerships.
Primary Purpose of Position: This position performs law‑enforcement work on a University campus or other State facility. With full powers of arrest, the officer enforces State and U.S. laws, controls traffic, investigates crimes within a limited jurisdiction, patrols an assigned area, handles complaints, collects evidence, testifies in court, and performs related duties.
Summary of Responsibilities- Protect lives and property through enforcement of laws and regulations.
- Conduct preliminary and follow‑up criminal investigations.
- Perform detentions, interviews, and arrests in accordance with the law and departmental directives.
- Communicate with others by vocal and written means, relaying clear and intelligible messages.
- Comply with all departmental directives and university policies; complete all assigned tasks and duties.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer per the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Commission (NC CJETSC).
- Valid state‑issued driver’s license.
- Successful completion of the appointing agency’s field‑training program for newly appointed Campus Police Officers.
- Police Officer I: 0–2 years of law‑enforcement experience, completion of North Carolina Basic Law Enforcement Training, and certification as a Law Enforcement Officer (or ability to achieve certification within one year).
- Police Officer II: Minimum 2 years of experience as a sworn local, state, or federal officer, completed Basic Law Enforcement Training, and at least a General Certification.
- Police Officer III: Minimum 4 years of experience as a sworn officer, completed Basic Law Enforcement Training, and attained General Certification.
- Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer per NC CJETSC.
- Valid state‑issued vehicle operator's license.
