The Virtualization Engineer is responsible for the upkeep, monitoring, configuration, and reliable operation of Forvis Mazars' virtualization infrastructure. The Virtualization Engineer will apply deep analytical problem remediation steps along with extensive problem‑solving experience to maximize Forvis Mazars server uptime and investment.
Typical candidates will have a technical degree in a field of study pertinent to the position, or they will have 1 to 5 years of experience in a previous role or position of a similar nature. Some candidates will have or will be pursuing certifications of a technical nature. Successful candidates will be assigned to specific teams and technologies with a defined scope of responsibility.
Successful candidates will demonstrate an aptitude for learning and advancing skills within a specific technical domain. Successful candidates will have strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Administer bare metal and virtualization hosts running a mix of Windows and Linux operating systems for performance, capacity, security, and stability issues and alert other team members to potential problems.
- Analyze inefficiencies in the server virtualization stack from a holistic view and perform remediations.
- Perform application and operating system installation, configuration, and maintenance.
- Create and maintain golden image templates across multiple operating systems.
- Perform day‑to‑day administration:
Nutanix hyper‑converged infrastructure, Dell EMC Isilon for unstructured file data, Active Directory administration, server setup, log review, security remediation, and other duties as assigned. - Work with various applications and equipment:
Microsoft stack (Office, Server, Skype, System Center, SQL, etc.), VMware, Hyper‑V, Nutanix, Service Now, Splunk, and other client‑specific applications. - Work effectively and efficiently with permissions in Microsoft Server 2008R2 through 2016 DFS‑based shares from a NAS. Work diligently to enhance or improve the virtualization stack via the introduction of hardware and software, or as necessary, minimize the impact on those processes.
- Works with Server Engineer Manager on virtualization infrastructure architecture. Use extensive previous experience, advanced critical thinking, and advanced troubleshooting skills to support, maintain, and improve the current and future environment.
- Uses network packet diagnosis tools (e.g., Wireshark) at an advanced level to diagnose server‑to‑client and server‑to‑server performance issues. Use virtualization diagnosis tools (e.g., Foglight, Veeam) at an advanced level to resolve performance issues throughout the virtualization stack.
- Document identified issues, create appropriate remediation plans, and produce root cause analyses.
- Provide escalation support services for service desk and enterprise application teams.
- Support deployment, compliance, and operation of firm security technologies across the server environment.
- Ensure managed virtualization layer, operating systems, and applications are patched appropriately.
- Regularly work closely with the firm's security department on server regulatory compliance.
- Conduct research into database issues, standards, and products as required.
- Present ideas in user‑friendly language.
- Work in the on‑call rotation and be available for a week at a time for after‑hours calls.
- Effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high‑pressure environment.
