RoleReporting to the Director, Labor & Employment, USA, the Sr. Legal Counsel will provide assistance regarding labor and employment transactional, litigation, and compliance matters across the country. The role works closely with HR teams, other legal team members, and business partners.
What You’ll Do- Provide legal advice and counseling on employment law issues to business unit and operations HR teams.
- Offer tactical and strategic legal advice to HR leadership on performance concerns, operational decisions, compliance with state/local laws, and risk management.
- Review and provide guidance on HR or employment‑related contracts and agreements.
- Draft, review, and advise on employee agreements including severance, separation, offer letters, and accommodation agreements.
- Partner with business units and HR teams to handle employment law claims, develop responsive documents, and resolve claims through settlement.
- Retain and manage outside counsel for lawsuits and employment law claims beyond internal capacity, ensuring compliance with guidelines and budget.
- Identify gaps in HR operations, propose solutions, and define legal risks.
- Provide guidance to HR on reorganizations, reductions in force, outsourcing, and transactions related to employment policies and risk.
- Develop and deploy training for HR employees and managers on labor and employment issues.
- Update employment policies and procedures to remain current and compliant.
- Participate in diversity‑related programs and provide legal guidance on proposals.
- Collaborate with other legal team members across labor, non‑labor, and other practice areas.
- Provide guidance to Legal Counsel and paralegals in labor and employment matters.
- Offer support to HSE on OSHA compliance, investigations, and policy implementation.
- JD from an accredited law school.
- Bar admission and license to practice law in the U.S., member in good standing.
- Minimum of eight (8) years of experience, specifically in labor and employment law.
- Experience working in a large law firm preferred.
- Experience with employee health and welfare.
- Ability to draft documents and policies in a concise manner for non‑lawyers.
- Advanced knowledge of federal, state, and municipal labor and employment laws and regulations.
- Significant experience delivering advice to business clients such as HR.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Self‑motivated with strong problem‑solving skills and the ability to provide solutions.
- Effective collaborator, able to take ownership of projects and meet deadlines.
- Organized, detail oriented, and able to maintain confidentiality.
- Adaptability to changing priorities in a fast‑paced environment.
- Ability to travel as needed.
