Overview

Job Title: Chemical Lab Technician I

Location: Charlotte, NC 28273

Duration: 12 Months

Pay rate: $21 to $22/hr

Work Hours: 8 AM - 5 PM

Environment: 100% onsite

Education: Bachelors degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering with hands-on lab experience, OR High school diploma with >5 years of hands-on lab experience.

Experience: Hands-on lab experience. Comfortable working with water-based and solvent-based coatings and the ability to wear a respirator hood for spraying paints. Proficiency levels in listed skills are noted (see Qualifications).

Responsibilities
  • Support technical service efforts within the client Resins group, focusing on coatings for metal protection (water-based and solvent-based systems).
  • Sprayouts in a spray booth onto panels when required.
  • Under supervision of chemists and team members, regularly perform mixing of materials to create formulations based on guided projects and pre-determined recipes.
  • Conduct tests, interpret and analyze data, compile results, prepare reports, and present conclusions to scientists, chemists, or team leaders.
  • Maintain lab inventory and participate in safety inspections and site safety programs.
Formulation
  • Use of balances and containment
  • Proper sample labeling
  • Mixing of precisely weighed materials through overhead mixers
  • Use of a high shear disperser blade for pigment incorporation
  • Use of additives to adjust viscosity, tune flow and wetting, and minimize foam
  • Safe operation and cleaning of equipment
Application
  • Drawdowns of paint via wire rod, drawdown bars
  • Use of HVLP spray gun to apply paint to panels
  • Drying panels in an oven
  • Wearing respirator hood and jumpsuit to spray in the spray booth
Testing & Data
  • Testing may include: pot-life, viscosity, gloss, chemical resistance, adhesion, corrosion, humidity, scratch, hardness, impact, abrasion, water resistance, dry time, gloss and color retention on accelerated weathering
  • Data collection: follow protocols, document findings, and report to technical specialists or the technical manager
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office tools
Qualifications
  • Hands-on lab experience is required.
  • Ability to work with and wear protective equipment (respirator hood, jumpsuit) in spray environments.
  • Strong attention to detail and demonstrated problem-solving skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication, and ability to report findings clearly.
