Minimum Requirements

The postdoctoral appointee must have earned Ph.D. degree within the past five years from an accredited university in one of the following fields:
Biology, Biological Sciences, Biophysics, Biochemistry, Chemical Biology, Molecular Genetics, or Cell and Molecular Biology.

Preferred Experience , Skills, Training/Education

A strong experimental background with evidence of experimental skills related to biochemistry, molecular biology, and cell biology is preferred. Previous working experience with mammalian cells (e.g., cell culture, immunofluorescence analysis, gene knock-down and/or knockout technologies, Comet assays) is preferred, but are not required.

Responsibilities

The Postdoctoral Fellow will report to Dr. Shan Yan and will be a senior member of the Yan group, supporting projects through original research, collaboration with other team members, and mentoring of students. The employee will also contribute to additional proposal efforts, thereby strengthening UNC Charlotte's ability to attract external funding.

The Postdoctoral Fellow’s principal research responsibilities will be investigating the molecular mechanisms of genome integrity. The employee will confer with Dr. Shan Yan on overall research direction and strategy but will exercise a considerable amount of independent judgment and original thinking in carrying out research that contributes to original knowledge and advances the University’s reputation in research. The employee will publish research results, in collaboration with Dr.

Shan Yan in recognized journals. The employee will share student mentoring with Dr. Shan Yan and will participate in departmental seminars and other professional activities as assigned.

The Yan lab in Department of Biological Sciences at University of North Carolina at Charlotte is interested in the molecular mechanisms of genome integrity and cancer etiology using Xenopus egg extracts and mammalian cells as model systems. In particular, the Yan lab has made contributions to a better understanding of innovative and molecular aspects of DNA damage repair, DNA damage response, single-strand break repair and signaling, and cancer therapeutics (Trends in Cell Biology, 2023;

A Postdoctoral Fellow (postdoc) is a professional apprenticeship designed to provide recent Ph.D. recipients with an opportunity to develop further the research skills acquired in their doctoral programs or to learn new research techniques, in preparation for an academic or research career. In the process of further developing their own research skills, it is expected that Postdoctoral Fellows will also play a significant role in the performance of research at the University and augment the role of graduate faculty in providing research instruction to graduate students.

A Postdoctoral Fellow works under the supervision of a regular faculty member, who serves as a mentor to the Fellow, and it is expected that the faculty mentor will impart the realities, and variety, of scientific careers, and will encourage experiences outside the laboratory to broaden postdocs’ aspirations.
