The Department of Public Health Sciences is in the process of developing a comprehensive communications and marketing strategy to support student, faculty, and staff recruitment, attract funding opportunities, and increase overall departmental visibility. A key part of this work includes strategy development and content creation across articles, the website, social media, and events. All communications efforts are designed to reflect and maintain UVA brand guidelines while enhancing outreach, strengthening faculty and student recognition, and promoting PHS activities across multiple platforms.
Communications& Community Outreach Committee
- Participate in monthly committee meetings (one hour via Zoom).
- Write, develop, and edit content highlighting PHS faculty and staff achievements.
- Share approved articles with committee leads for possible inclusion in SOM Medicine in Motion News.
- Assist the Faculty Lead (Jenn Lobo) with developing and posting social media content (Facebook, Instagram, Linked In) while maintaining UVA brand guidelines.
- Contribute to strategy development for communications and community outreach initiatives.
- Post articles and new content on the PHS website, including Medicine in Motion News and original writing.
- Assist faculty with updating their individual profile pages.
- Post updates for the Director of Academic Programs (Tracey Brookman).
- Manage general department website updates as requested, such as departmental information and faculty changes, ensuring alignment with UVA brand standards.
- Support strategy development for website updates to align with departmental goals.
- Assist with promoting PHS events, including development of event-related content.
- Provide photography coverage for departmental activities such as meetings, events, student poster days, and other occasions, for use in communications and on the website. While a cell phone may be used, it would be ideal for the individual to have access to a DSLR or similar camera and possess basic photography skills to ensure high‑quality images.
Students must be eligible to receive and accept Federal Work Study. This position is open to UVA undergraduate and graduate students only.

This is a paid position that is available to students who have received and accepted federal work study. Students will be paid $15-$17 an hour and are expected to work between 5-10 hours per week.
This position begins as soon as it is filled and ends May 8, 2026; however, continued employment beyond this date is a possibility.
