Position: Open Rank Abdominal Transplant Surgeon

Position Overview

The Department of Surgery at the University of Virginia (UVA) invites applications for a faculty position at the Assistant, Associate, or Professor level in the Division of Transplant Surgery. The successful candidate will join a highly productive and expanding abdominal transplant program dedicated to the surgical management of patients requiring complex multi‑organ transplantation.

Clinical Responsibilities

Clinical responsibilities will include the evaluation, operative management, and longitudinal care of patients undergoing liver, kidney, pancreas, and multi‑organ transplantation, as well as surgical management of end‑stage organ disease and transplant‑related complications. The position emphasizes excellence in deceased and living donor surgery, advanced immunosuppression management, and participation in innovative approaches to organ preservation and allocation.

Education & Research

The role includes active participation in medical student, resident, and transplant surgery fellow education, with opportunities to contribute to curriculum development and mentorship. Robust clinical, translational, and outcomes research opportunities are available, supported by strong institutional infrastructure. Tenure eligibility is dependent upon qualifications.

Candidate Requirements

Candidates must have an MD and be board certified in General Surgery by the American Board of Surgery. They should have completed fellowship training in Abdominal Transplant Surgery and be certified or eligible for certification by the American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS). Applicants must be licensed or eligible for licensure to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong leadership, teamwork, and communication skills, along with advanced knowledge and substantial experience in liver, kidney, pancreas, and multi-organ transplantation.

A strong interest in academic medicine is essential, including a commitment to teaching and scholarly activity. The successful applicant will also show a clear dedication to innovation, quality improvement, and advancing the field of transplant surgery.
