Position Summary
The Vice Chair of Faculty Affairs will provide strategic leadership and operational oversight for faculty development, engagement, and advancement across the Department of Emergency Medicine.
This individual will partner closely with the Department Chair, other Vice Chairs (Education, Research & Innovation), and UVA Health leadership to foster a thriving, collaborative, and equitable environment for faculty success at all ranks and across clinical, research, and educational missions.
The Vice Chair will serve as a key advisor to the Chair on faculty-related policies, oversee faculty appointment and promotion processes, champion well-being and recognition initiatives, and ensure alignment with School of Medicine and UVA Health priorities.
Key Responsibilities
Faculty Development and Advancement
- Lead faculty development initiatives, including mentorship programs for early-career and mid-career faculty.
- Oversee promotion, tenure, and reappointment processes in collaboration with the School of Medicine.
- Partner with the Chair to ensure equitable evaluation and advancement opportunities for all faculty.
- Develop structured pathways for leadership development, academic promotion, and scholarship.
Faculty Engagement and Well-Being
- Foster an inclusive and supportive departmental culture that aligns with UVA’s ASPIRE values (Accountability, Stewardship, Professionalism, Integrity, Respect, and Empathy).
- Lead initiatives to improve faculty experience, well-being, and retention.
- Develop and oversee recognition and awards programs.
- Collaborate with departmental and institutional leadership on strategies for diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
Mentorship and Academic Growth
- Oversee mentorship programs for faculty pursuing academic promotion, educational leadership, and research careers.
- Identify and support faculty with interest in academic leadership positions at UVA and in national organizations.
- Provide guidance on effective academic goal setting, career planning, and time management.
Operational and Strategic Leadership
- Serve as a core member of the department’s senior leadership team.
- Align faculty affairs initiatives with departmental goals in clinical care, education, research, and innovation.
- Work closely with UVA’s Office of Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development and the School of Medicine’s leadership on policies and initiatives.
- Provide regular reporting to the Chair on faculty demographics, promotion metrics, retention, and engagement.
