OverviewCounty Public Schools seeks a dedicated assistant to provide classroom and behavioral support for students with special needs. The role involves supervising, teaching, behavior intervention, data collection, and coordination with teachers and specialists.
General Definition Of WorkSupport the instructional program by supervising, caring for, and instructing students with special needs, assisting in implementing plans, monitoring behavior, documenting activities and progress, and supporting students’ IEP goals.
Essential Functions- Develop and maintain a pleasant, orderly classroom environment, maintain instructional materials, design bulletin boards, and assist with clean‑up activities.
- Assist students in completion of learning tasks assigned by classroom teachers.
- Lead and/or facilitate instruction of individuals in 1:1, small group, or whole class settings.
- Execute instructional plans as designated by the classroom teacher and the student’s IEP.
- Maintain student training data according to prescribed procedures.
- Assist students in following routines, directions, schedules, and IEP instructions.
- Set up and operate audio‑visual equipment.
- Help develop and implement student schedules, sensory programs, motor activities, discrete trial drills, and behavior management plans.
- Create alternative activities for independent work based on teacher‑directed activities.
- Coordinate school and home supports and work tasks.
- Collect data and facilitate accommodations as required by the teacher or supervisor.
- Communicate effectively with the special education teacher to support IEP goals.
- Demonstrate cooperation, openness for growth, and willingness to contribute to a team approach.
- Assist with records, lunch money collection, field trips, library visits, and assemblies under supervision.
- Monitor attendance, behavior, and suspension data.
- Perform clerical duties such as typing, filing, and duplicating.
- Provide direct support to staff and students by modeling research‑based interventions.
- Coordinate with specialists and staff to implement behavior curriculum, crisis plans, and transitions.
- Supervise students during lunch, free time, and non‑instructional periods.
- Maintain a notebook with behavior logs, BIP progress notes, social skills lesson plans, incident reports, and communications.
- Assist students with daily living skills (toileting, feeding, diaper changes, positioning).
- Assist with deregulated students, team meetings, and medical‑related duties (catheterization, gastric feedings, breathing devices, colostomy, ileostomy needs).
- Assist with carry‑over of related services (OT, PT, speech, AP, vision).
- Perform other duties as assigned by teacher or principal.
Skills and Abilities
- Develop and maintain an empathetic attitude toward disabled/handicapped students.
- Willingness to learn specialized instructional and management techniques for students with disabilities.
- Effective communication and ability to build working relationships with students, parents, and staff.
- High‑school graduate or equivalence; willing to seek and maintain CPR certification.
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high‑school graduation, including basic keyboard and filing training, which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position.
Physical Conditions and Nature of WorkTypical duties include frequent walking, standing, light lifting up to 80 lb, occasional travel on field trips, use of wheelchairs, changing catheters/diapers, and safeguarding hygiene. The role may require after‑hours, flexible schedules, and working in varied environmental conditions.
