Position: Preservation Student Assistant-UVA Library (Student Wage)

Preservation Services is seeking a responsible, detail-oriented student assistant to help the University of Virginia Library care for its circulating collection. This position plays an important role in ensuring that UVA students and faculty have reliable access to the books and materials that support research, teaching, and scholarship.

The ideal candidate enjoys hands-on work, pays close attention to detail, and can solve problems independently. Student assistants will receive training in the use of specialized tools, equipment, and preservation techniques. Applicants should be open to learning new skills and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities include:
  • Making regular rounds to collect and deliver materials to and from the Preservation Department.
  • Charging and discharging materials using the library’s circulation database.
  • Applying call number labels, duplicating barcodes, and creating title labels using Word.
  • Measuring materials for custom enclosures ordered from outside vendors.
  • Creating in-house enclosures, including pamphlet binders, tux boxes, and phase boxes.
  • Using specialized preservation tools and equipment (training provided).

Student assistants will receive training in all tasks and in the safe and effective use of Preservation Services tools and equipment.

Minimum Requirements
  • Education: Must be a currently enrolled undergraduate student at the University of Virginia.
  • Experience: No prior experience required; all training will be provided.
  • Licensure: None required.
Physical Demands
  • Occasional walking
  • Mostly standing
  • Frequent and repetitive use of hands
  • Some lifting required
Work Hours & Pay
  • Approximately 10 hours per week
    , Monday–Friday
  • Follows spring semester 2026 dates
  • Schedule must fall between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM
  • Rate of pay: $16.71 per hour
