The Special Education Assistant II provides support to the instructional program with responsibility for assisting in the supervision, care, and instruction of students with special needs; assisting in implementing plans for instruction; monitoring student behavior; documenting activities and progress; and supporting students’ IEP goals. The role includes extended classroom support and follow-up for students who receive special services; monitoring and modeling evidence-based behavior intervention strategies;
helping with data collection and analysis; and communicating with the special education teacher or behavior specialist regarding needs to ensure behavior interventions are practiced with fidelity. The aide serves as a resource for equitable opportunities for students with challenging behaviors and maintains interventions with existing supports in the school.
All work is performed under the direction and supervision of the classroom teacher, and the aide may independently carry out aspects of the instructional program which may occur outside the normal school facility.
Essential Functions- Develops and maintains a pleasant and orderly classroom environment (e.g., maintaining instructional materials, designing bulletin boards, assisting with cleanup).
- Assists students in completing learning tasks assigned by classroom teachers.
- Leads and/or facilitates teaching of individuals in 1:1, small group, or whole class settings.
- Follows instructional plans designated by the classroom teacher and, if appropriate, the student’s IEP.
- Maintains student training data according to prescribed procedures.
- Assists individual students to follow routines, directions, and schedules and to complete tasks aligned with IEP requirements.
- Sets up and operates audio-visual equipment as needed.
- Supports development and implementation of student schedules, sensory programs, motor activities, discrete trial drills, and behavior management plans.
- Creates alternative activities for independent work based on teacher-directed activities.
- Assists with coordinating school and home supports and tasks.
- Assists with data collection and facilitating accommodations as required by the teacher or supervisor.
- Communicates effectively with the special education teacher to support IEP goals.
- Contributes to a team approach to the educational program.
- Under supervision, assists in maintaining student records, handling related instructional activities (e.g., field trips, library events) as directed.
- Monitors student attendance, behavior, and suspension data.
- Performs clerical tasks as directed (e.g., typing, filing, duplicating).
- Provides direct and indirect support to staff by modeling and applying research/evidence-based interventions and curriculum.
- Coordinates with specialists and school staff to implement behavior curricula and intervention plans.
- Provides transition support for students moving between educational settings and helps develop crisis/safety plans.
- Assists with interventions to help students remain in school and/or stabilize their progress.
- Supervises and trains students during lunch and non-instructional periods as directed.
- Maintains a notebook monitored by the special education teacher and specialists, including behavior logs, BIPs, social skills plans, incident reports, and communications records.
- Assists students with daily living skills as needed and supports deregulated students.
