Job Description: Special Education Assistant II – Greer Elementary School, 2025‑26 School Year
Albemarle County Public Schools invites applications for a Special Education Assistant II position. The role supports students with special needs throughout the school setting, fostering an inclusive and equitable learning environment.
General Definition of WorkThe Special Education Assistant II provides support to the instructional program with responsibility for supervising, caring for, and instructing students with special needs. Duties include implementing instructional plans, monitoring behavior, documenting progress, and supporting IEP goals. The assistant works under the direction of the classroom teacher to ensure students receive consistent, research‑based interventions and classroom support.
Essential FunctionsDevelop and maintain a pleasant, orderly classroom environment (e.g., maintain instructional materials, design bulletin boards, assist clean‑up activities).
Assist students in completing learning tasks assigned by classroom teachers.
Lead or facilitate instruction for individuals, small groups, or whole class instruction.
Carry out instructional plans as designated by the classroom teacher and, where appropriate, the student’s IEP.
Maintain student training data according to prescribed procedures.
Assist students to follow routines, directions, and individual schedules, adhering to daily schedules and IEP requirements.
Procure, set up, and operate audio‑visual equipment.
Assist in developing and implementing individual student schedules, sensory activities, motor group activities, discrete trial drills, and behavior‑management plans.
Create alternative activities for independent work based on teacher‑directed activities.
Assist in coordinating school and home supports and work tasks.
Assist with data collection and accommodation implementation as required by the classroom teacher or supervisor.
Communicate effectively with special education teachers and specialists to support IEP goals.
Demonstrate cooperation and a willingness to contribute to a team approach to the educational program.
Under supervision, assist in maintaining student records, collecting lunch monies, and related instructional activities (e.g., field trips, library, assembly).
Monitor student attendance, behavior, and suspension data.
Perform clerical duties such as typing, filing, and duplicating at the direction of the classroom teacher.
Provide direct support by introducing and modeling research‑based interventions and curriculum.
Coordinate with specialists and school staff to implement behavior curriculum.
Provide transition plans and support for students moving between educational settings.
Develop effective intervention plans and crisis/safety plans in collaboration with specialists and staff.
Supervise and train students in lunchroom or lunch periods.
Supervise and train students during free time and other non‑instructional periods as directed.
Maintain a notebook for monitoring by the special education teacher and specialists, including behavior logs, BIP progress notes, social skills lesson plans, incident reports, referrals, and communication logs.
Assist students with daily living skills (e.g., toileting, feeding, diaper changes, positioning).
Assist with deregulated students.
Participate in team meetings.
Assist with medical‑related duties (catheterization, gastrointestinal feedings, assistive breathing devices, colostomy, ileostomy needs).
Assist in carrying over related services (Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech, Adapted Physical Education, Vision).
Perform other duties as assigned by classroom teacher or principal.
Skills and Abilities
• Develop and maintain an empathetic attitude toward students with disabilities.
• Learn specialized instructional and management techniques for disabled/handicapped students.
• Communicate and develop effective working relationships with students, parents, and staff.
• High school graduate or equivalent, with willingness to obtain and maintain CPR certification.
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to high‑school graduation, including basic keyboard and filing training, that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position.
Physical Conditions and Nature of WorkWork is performed in classroom, gym, cafeteria, auditorium, and recreational areas. Requirements include frequent walking, standing, light lifting up to 80 pounds, and other physical activities to support disabled students. Occasional travel on field trips, moving wheelchairs, personal hygiene of students, and attendance at conferences or training beyond normal hours may be necessary. The role demands patience, self‑motivation, and the ability to work under stressful conditions.
EvaluationPerformance will be evaluated on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the responsibilities above.
