About the Position

The Department of Mathematics at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA, invites applications for multiple Whyburn Research Associate and Lecturer positions. The appointment begins with the fall term of 2026, with an anticipated start date of August 25, 2026.

Responsibilities

The successful candidates will be expected to conduct their own research, under supervision of a faculty mentor, and teach three courses per year.

Qualifications
  • On track to receive a Ph.D. in Mathematics or a closely related field by June 2026 and must hold a Ph.D. at the time of appointment.
  • Evidence of outstanding accomplishments and promise in both research and teaching.
  • Research interests complement the strengths of the department’s current faculty. Priority will be given to applicants in Algebraic Combinatorics, Analytic Number Theory, Geometric Group Theory, Geometric Topology, Geometry and Probability.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who have received their Ph.D. within the last three years.

  • Aims of future research;
  • Potential collaborations/projects at UVa;
  • Teaching experience.

Appointment & Terms

All positions carry an initial appointment of one year, renewable for two additional years, contingent on satisfactory performance. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment. This position will also require an Education Verification (FSAKA).
