Athletics Postdoctoral Fellow – Psychology

The University of Virginia Athletics Department is hiring a post‑doctoral fellow for the 2026–2027 academic year. The fellowship is a full‑time, 12‑month position that begins August 1, 2026 and ends July 31, 2027, with start and end dates negotiable.

Supervision will be provided by two full‑time licensed clinical sport psychologists embedded within UVA Athletics and a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). They provide confidential mental‑health and sports‑performance services to over 750 student‑athletes from 25 Division‑I teams. The LPC also plays an active role in the fellow’s professional growth and skill development.

The post‑doctoral fellow will be responsible for providing mental‑health and performance services to Division‑I varsity student‑athletes and will have the opportunity to conduct individual counseling and sports‑performance work, team meetings, consultation with staff, crisis management, and coordination of care with multidisciplinary treatment team members. Additional specialized training in disordered eating behavior, eating disorders, body‑image concerns, and management of return‑to‑competition issues in cases of concussions and other injuries will be available based on the fellow’s previous experience and interests.

Conducting brief research proposals on utilization patterns, stigma, and other barriers, as well as intervention and educational outcomes, is also possible.

• Strong clinical, interpersonal, and communication skills.
• Demonstrated competency working with diverse client populations.
• Clinical experience with a college student/young adult population.

• Completion of a Ph.D. or Psy.
  
  D. from an APA‑accredited Counseling or Clinical Psychology program and an APA‑accredited doctoral internship prior to fellowship start.
• Prior clinical experience in a relevant area of expertise is preferred.
• Clinician (clinical, applied, or school psychologist) license.
• Background check verifying no criminal or other record that would preclude employment.

• Clinical experience with student‑athletes.
• Prior experience with performance‑enhancement services related to sport.
• Experience in applied research with surveys and interest in collaboration with sports medicine, kinesiology, and other care‑team partners.

This full‑time position offers UVA benefits, including 22 days of paid time off (increasing with service), 13‑plus paid holidays each year, health plan options, retirement benefits, tuition and professional development benefits after the first six months of employment, and an employee wellness program that can earn up to $500 /year. The salary is $60,375.00. This position will not sponsor immigration.
