The Department of Surgery at the University of Virginia School of Medicine seeks a Data Science Professional 1 or 2 to work with Dr. Thomas Shin on robotic and surgical data sciences. The level will be determined by qualifications. The ideal candidate will have dual expertise in clinical surgery/surgical diseases and data science to support our expanding robotic and surgical data science program.
Responsibilities- Conduct clinical and data‑driven research utilizing institutional and national databases.
- Curate and maintain our institutional surgical databases.
- Access and manage large‑scale datasets, and advance our robotic/surgical data science initiatives.
- Bridge the gap between clinical surgical knowledge and computational analytics, enabling sophisticated analyses of surgical outcomes, robotic surgery performance metrics, and quality improvement initiatives.

- Previous experience conducting clinical and data‑driven research utilizing institutional and national databases.
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings and programs.

Position InformationThis is a restricted position, which is dependent on funding and is contingent upon funding availability. The position is based in Charlottesville, VA, and must be performed fully on‑site.
