PositionSummary
The Office of University Communications seeks a Front-End Developer who is passionate about merging the art of web design and programming to showcase UVA Today news stories, multimedia, and other marketing content across UVA websites and mass email platforms.
In this role, the Front-End Developer will curate a range of written and visual news content daily and create beautiful, accessible, and often interactive web pages and emails that engage diverse audiences. This position is part of a four-person Digital Development and User Experience team and collaborates closely with a multidisciplinary group of professionals including news writers, editors, photographers, video producers, designers, and marketers.
Together, this team supports University Communications' mission to position UVA as a national model of excellence in public higher education.
- Develop visually compelling and interactive web pages and daily emails for UVA Today
, the University's news and content platform. - Create and maintain interactive and multimedia content, including photo galleries, slide shows, animations, videos, and other embedded digital elements.
- Play an integral role in the design and presentation of the UVA Today website and email communications.
- Ensure all content meets digital accessibility standards and is responsive across multiple browsers and mobile devices.
- Contribute to improvements in day-to-day website and email functionality, including search engine optimization (SEO) best practices.
- Contribute to Digital Development and User Experience team initiatives, including website refresh projects and quality assurance testing across a range of University Communications websites.
- Perform other tasks as assigned, including improvements to onsite search tools and calendar functionality.
- Bachelor's degree in web design, web development, computer science, or a related discipline.
- Minimum of one year of professional experience in a web development role; experience in a fast-paced, content-driven environment preferred (two or more years strongly preferred).
- Experience managing websites and website design projects.
- Strong attention to detail, ability to work independently, and capability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Demonstrated interest in continuous learning and skill development.
- Ability to adapt to new digital tools, emerging technologies, and evolving digital design trends.

- Experience with a JavaScript library (e.g., jQuery or Tailwind)
- SVG animations
- Content Management Systems (CMS)

- Experience managing mass email programs.
- Knowledge of WCAG AA digital accessibility standards.
- Experience applying SEO best practices.
This position is primarily sedentary and involves extensive use of desktop computers. Occasional travel may be required to attend meetings and University programs.
Salary RangeAnticipated hiring range: $70,000 - $80,000
