SCPS Director of Operations is responsible for the strategic leadership and day‑to‑day management of SCPS facilities, operations, and hospitality, including staff supervision, maintenance planning, project management, and vendor coordination. This role ensures that SCPS facilities are safe, efficient, and aligned with organizational goals, while fostering a culture of excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement.

The successful candidate should embody a service focus, with the capacity for both hands‑on execution and effective leadership for a growing team for facilities, hospitality, and events. Periodic nights and weekends will be required.

Key Responsibilities Leadership & Staff Management
  • Recruit, hire, train, schedule, evaluate, and supervise facility, hospitality, and event staff to ensure high performance and professional development.
  • Foster a positive, collaborative, and safety‑conscious work environment.
Facilities Operations & Maintenance
  • Collaborate with Facilities Management to coordinate preventative, routine, and deferred maintenance schedules.
  • Support event planning and space utilization by ensuring facilities are prepared and maintained appropriately.
  • Conduct regular risk management and safety audits to ensure compliance with regulations and best practices.
Vendor & Stakeholder Relations
  • Establish and maintain strong professional relationships with internal stakeholders, Facilities Management personnel, and external service providers.
  • Oversee vendor contracts and ensure service quality, cost‑effectiveness, and compliance with organizational standards.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education:

    Bachelor's degree.
  • Experience:

    At least four years of experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree with four years of experience. Additional experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • 7+ years of progressive experience in facilities operations, including supervisory or management roles.
  • Strong knowledge of building systems, maintenance protocols, and safety regulations.
  • Proven experience managing budgets, contracts, and cross‑functional teams.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in facilities management and Microsoft Office software.
About the Position

This position is located in Charlottesville, VA and is in person. This is a full‑time, exempt level, benefited position with UVA benefits. Employees benefits package highlights include:

The anticipated compensation range for this position is $85,000–$95,000, commensurate with experience. This position will remain open until filled but preference will be given to applications received by October 31, 2025. This position will not sponsor applicants for work visas. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment.

This position will require frequent traveling, standing, and climbing stairs to access buildings and facilities in order to assess conditions and review facility projects and the ability to lift/push/pull 50–100 lbs. It also requires occasional light lifting, bending, and stooping, in addition to the use of desktop computers in an office environment. The job may require standing for prolonged periods, frequently bending/stooping/traveling, climbing (ladder, steps) and reaching (overhead, extensive, repetitive).

Also required: proficient communicative, auditory, and visual skills; and attention to detail and ability to write legibly. The employee may be exposed to cold and heat.
