Lab & Research Technician II

Dr. Jarrod Marto of the University of Virginia Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Genetics and Department of Chemistry is recruiting a highly motivated research technician to join his team. This position offers an immersive research experience for candidates planning to continue to graduate or medical school.

• Tissue culture and extraction of proteins and peptides.
• Target engagement assays, activity‑based protein profiling, and biochemical validation assays.
• Analysis of large‑scale mass spectrometry data and quantitative proteomic profiling.
• Design and execution of experiments to quantify cellular proteins or post‑translational modifications (PTMs).
• Identification of on‑ and off‑target binding of small molecule probes at the protein, gene family, and proteome level.
• Presentation of data during lab meetings and documentation of results.
• Assistance to undergraduate students, volunteers, and Professional Research Staff.
• Operational and administrative support under moderate supervision.

• Associate’s degree required; may accept equivalent combination of experience and education.
• 2+ years of laboratory experience, including student experience.

• Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or related field.
• Hands‑on experience in biomedical research techniques and basic computer skills.
• Demonstrated experience in mass spectrometry or other high‑throughput molecular profiling techniques; experience in Python or scripting languages is a plus but not required.
• Strong interpersonal and organizational skills, attention to detail, methodical record keeping, and a desire to contribute to research projects both independently and within a team.

This position requires extensive periods of standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Additional bench work, keyboarding, and animal procedures require finer finger manipulation.

This is a restricted position, dependent on funding and contingent upon availability. The position is based in Charlottesville, VA, and must be performed fully on‑site.
