B. Carter Center for Immunology Research (Carter Immunology Center) seek a fundamental understanding of how the immune system works. If they can determine, on the most basic level, how the immune system distinguishes between healthy and harmful cells, this could lead to revolutionary new treatments and cures based on controlling the immune response.
The Beirne
B. Carter Immunology Center (CIC) at the University of Virginia's School of Medicine seeks a Research Scientist to join the Ewald Lab at the CIC. The successful applicant must have demonstrated experience in innate immunology, microbiology and/or biochemistry. The work will require the incumbent to display significant knowledge concerning mechanisms of host-parasite/pathogen interactions and innate immunity. Additionally, the position requires experience in molecular and cellular biology, genetic manipulation of host cells and/or pathogens (ideally Toxoplasma or related protozoa), protein biochemistry, animal models of infection, and working with omics datasets.

- Supervised by a senior scholar; and allows the appointee to publish the results of his/her research or scholarship
- Strong time management and communication skills
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Assist with maintenance and upkeep of laboratory, as applicable
- In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned
Eligibility for NIH postdoctoral fellowship funding is helpful but not mandatory. The incumbent will participate in a range of relevant lab projects and write study reports for the study sponsors, papers, and grant applications. As time permits, the incumbent will be expected to develop research programs. The incumbent will also be expected to attend and participate in laboratory meetings and CIC-related seminars, as well as work with graduate students, technicians, fellows, and collaborators in the laboratories involved in the project.
Note:
Research Scientist positions are for candidates who have obtained their PhD and have a MINIMUM of 3 years postdoctoral experience.
- Education:
Requires a doctoral degree or master's degree with significant experience.
The ideal candidate must demonstrate a high competency in murine infection and monitoring, molecular biology techniques, working with omics data sets, parasite or microbe culture infection, and genetic manipulation of host and/or microbial cells, bacterial cultures, protein analysis (western blot, ELISA etc.), and imaging techniques.
Physical DemandsThis is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
Position Type & Work Location- This is an exempt-level, benefited position.
- This is a restricted position, which is dependent on funding and is contingent upon funding availability.
- This position is based in Charlottesville, VA, and must be performed fully on-site.
