Position: Laboratory and Research Technician 2

The Laboratory and Research Technician 2 role provides support for research in mucosal immunology in the Petri Laboratory encompassing projects related to mucosal inflammation, gut repair and vaccine development. Lab Techs focus on performing routine research tasks and developing skills. They assume routine to moderately complex technical support that can be performed with some degree of independence when following established protocols and procedures.

Research protocols include tissue culture and use of animal models in conjunction with molecular and cellular assays as needed to support the projects as they develop. Appropriate training and supervision will be provided for working within the Biosafety level 2 (BSL2) and Level 3 (BSL-3) labs. Responsibilities include supporting laboratory day-to-day operations including supply stocking and ordering, experiment execution, and data analysis and write-up which will be conducted under the direction and training of primary project supervisors.

Willingness to work with animal models is required.

Job Responsibilities
  • Applies knowledge of sanitation techniques and laboratory safety.
  • Applies knowledge of research and testing procedures and techniques, and of animal handling, care and welfare.
  • Performs a variety of procedures supporting laboratory research
  • May provide limited surgical assistance.
  • Follows established directions and procedures.
  • Frequent contacts with co-workers, supervisors, students, faculty, and research staff to discuss study techniques or results or handling and care of animals.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
Minimum Requirements

Education:

Associate's degree

Experience:

At least 2 years of lab experience which may include student experience. Bachelor's degree in related science will be considered in lieu of experience.

Licensure:
None.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Biology/Biochemistry/Microbiology or in similar fields.
  • Experience in a lab setting.
Physical Demands

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.

Salary will be commensurate with education and experience. This is a non-exempt-level, benefited position. Learn more about UVA benefits.

This position is a restricted position, which is dependent on funding and is contingent upon funding availability.
