Fire Systems Assistant Technician
The Fire Protection Department of UVA’s Facilities Management is seeking a Fire Systems Assistant Technician. Facilities Management supports the University of Virginia’s wide range of research, academic, and patient care programs. With over 1,200 employees dedicated to excellence, Facilities Management oversees the day‑to‑day operation, repair, and maintenance of UVA’s buildings, infrastructure, and grounds, and manages capital construction and renovation for University‑owned and leased properties.
PositionSummary
The Fire and Life Safety Team carries out code‑required inspections, defined maintenance routines, and repair service for all University properties. The Fire Systems Assistant Technician assists the Team in providing consistent, cost‑effective, and reliable maintenance and service to the University facilities. The Assistant Technician helps perform inspections and maintenance of fire detection and suppression systems, prepares and maintains accurate records, and works under direct supervision while also performing some independent tasks to keep students, staff, patients, and visitors safe.
Duties- Install and repair fire system devices and components with guidance from a Fire System Technician.
- Assist technicians in operating fire system devices during tests, monitoring the fire alarm panel, and accurately recording results.
- Maintain inspection records, including inventory of fire safety devices and equipment.
- Ensure the availability, readiness, and proper use of required accident prevention procedures, safety and fire prevention equipment, protective clothing and devices, and first‑aid supplies.
- Work flexible schedule as needed.
- Other duties may be assigned.
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Experience performing work in electrical and mechanical trades.
- Valid driver's license.
- Ability to assist in the inspection and assessment of fire systems.
- Ability to accurately record observations, note violations, and present corrective recommendations professionally.
- Ability to work effectively with building occupants and other authorities having jurisdiction.
- Knowledge of building fire suppression and detection equipment and systems.
- Knowledge of electrical and mechanical work practices.
- Experience performing electrical or mechanical trades.
- Basic computer skills.
Anticipated hiring range: $19.00–$22.00 per hour ($39,520–$45,760 annually). Full‑time position with UVA benefits. PhysicalDemands
Employee must be able to sit, stand, walk, climb stairs and ladders, crawl, stoop, bend, squat, lift, pull, and perform repetitive tasks with both hands, including overhead work. Normal vision and hearing are required (correctable), with color vision and a sense of smell required for some areas of employment.
