Job Description

JOB PURPOSE: The Shelter Support Line Prevention and Diversion Worker (SSL) /Residential Worker provides general information, books shelter beds, and provides confidential shelter options for those that have lost housing and individuals or families who are at imminent risk of becoming homeless.

Characteristic

Job Duties

The incumbent is responsible for the following range of job duties characteristic, or typical of the job class:

  • Answer the SSL phone and complete callbacks
  • Implements diversion strategies to prevent homelessness
  • Accurately fill out intake forms
  • Liaises with referral sources and other external agencies as needed (e.g., child protection services, police, community organizations)
  • Regularly communicates with emergency shelters (daily), housing navigator, landlords, and service providers
  • Complete daily and monthly spreadsheets and reports
  • Make appropriate referrals
  • Liaison with hotel/motels
  • Monitors the activities of the clients/residents and maintains availability for personal, practical and morale support; may include providing safe storage and recording of prescribed medications
  • Accurately records day-to-day happenings using appropriate methods; maintains logbooks and completes occurrence reports
  • Coordinates client care relating to security issues; doing bed checks
  • May carry out inspection/security checks of property and grounds in accordance with policies and procedures
  • Handles the admission, orientation and evaluation of clients’ understanding of rules; ensures ongoing enforcement of policies, which may include client discipline
  • May serve as Receptionist for Shelter
  • May prepare or provide simple meals for clients/residents
  • Provide follow up and supports to clients accessing SSL options and resources
  • Maintain office equipment
  • Ongoing training and continuous learning
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Education Level Attained
  • The successful job applicant will have completed high school, plus specialized courses of up to six (6) months (Addictions Facilities).

NOTE:

An alternative level of education and experience may be acceptable.

Special Licenses, Diplomas, Certifications Or Requirements

The successful applicant will hold/have:

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 and be comfortable working with, and developing, Spreadsheets using Excel
  • Be familiar with housing supports on PEI
  • Be knowledgeable of the regions, counties, and rural areas of PEI

Minimum Prior Related Experience
  • The incumbent must have the following experience before hire:
  • More than three months but less than one year of prior related experience, including, experience with frontline work in a social service setting.
Physical Effort/Dexterity Required
  • The performance of the job requires moderate amounts of keyboarding and performing walk abouts.
Concentration Required
  • The performance of the job requires continuously monitoring the environment, monitoring security cameras and attentiveness when interacting with clients and recording information.
