The Supervisor – Facility Services (North) will be responsible for the custodial and maintenance teams and external contractors in the Sarnia‑Lambton region of the Board to ensure educational facilities remain clean, safe, and fully operational. This role provides leadership in day‑to‑day building operations and maintenance, with a focus on employee performance, optimizing workloads, and overseeing supply chain requirements to meet high organizational standards.
Reporting/ Responsibilities
- Oversee the safe, clean and effective operation of school facilities for the comfort of employees, students, and visitors in compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, policies, procedures, collective agreement and applicable legislation.
- Regularly visit facilities to supervise operations and maintenance in the assigned geographical area.
- Report to the Coordinator – Facility Services on the status of building operations and maintenance, identify issues and requirements for action and prepare reports as required.
- Direct, supervise and coach 25+ unionized custodial staff and 4+ unionized maintenance staff, coordinating recruitment, monitoring and evaluating performance and monitoring staff attendance records.
- Attend meetings with Human Resources and Union representatives for disciplinary investigations, disciplinary actions and grievances as necessary.
- Maintain records to authorize vacations, leave of absences and other absences of Unionized staff.
- Enforce OHSA/WHMIS and collective agreements through regular site audits, accident investigations, and the management of return-to-work programs.
- Respond as the primary daytime lead for urgent issues and emergencies that occur related to Community Use of Schools, Childcare Operators, security, flood, fire, gas leaks, power loss, equipment failure, etc. for the assigned geographical area.
- Assist with the monitoring of the Maintenance and Custodial Services budgets including inventory control of supplies and equipment.
- Oversee school space turnovers for closed classrooms and major projects, including large‑scale furniture moves, setups, and replacements.
- Schedule daytime (approx. 5am-3pm) and Community Use (evenings and weekends) custodial coverage, coordinating with the Shift Supervisor – Custodial Services and monitoring all staff assignments for the assigned geographical region.
- Cover scheduling of afternoon (approx. 1pm-11pm) custodial coverage for the assigned geographical region when the Shift Supervisor – Custodial Services is out of office.
- Respond to emergencies, security alarms, etc. in the assigned geographical region after hours and on weekends per the on‑call procedure.
- Prepare and implement updates to custodial run plans and cleaning schedules as required.
- Activate and authorize work orders and logs for appropriate staff and contractors, arranging and monitoring required repairs for completion of work orders.
- Supervise emergency repairs with Maintenance staff and/or contractors, ensuring communication with all applicable stakeholders.
- Schedule contracted work with input from school Administrators, CLASS and Childcare management.
- Resolve issues regarding regular operational and maintenance contracts to ensure school sites adhere to cleanliness and safety standards, scheduling site visits in coordination with school Administrators, CLASS and Childcare management.
- Schedule training and mentorship for all new hires.
- Facilitate regular professional development, onboarding, and technical training for custodial and maintenance staff.
- Mentor custodial staff on standardized cleaning techniques and equipment.
