Veterinary Extern - General Practice

Overview

An externship experience at an NVA hospital allows veterinary students to understand the day-to-day operations of a practice and gain valuable hands‑on clinical experience. NVA hospitals share a supportive environment, a commitment to excellent medicine, and exceptional service to animals and the people who love them.

Students work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gather patient histories, perform physical examinations, create treatment plans, conduct diagnostics, provide dentistry services, observe or assist in surgical procedures, and manage patients medically. Students also practice communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.

Externals generally attend the Egan Animal Hospital for two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate in NVA externships.

Veterinary students in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend.

At NVA Canada diversity and inclusion are an important part of our everyday reality.

We are committed to fostering an open and inclusive environment where everyone belongs, our people feel comfortable and confident to be themselves and reach their full potential regardless of age, race, national or ethnic origin, gender identity or expression, marital and family status, religion or other belief, culture, sexual orientation, or disability.
