We have an opening for an Instructor - Industrial Automation & Robotics (TCAT) at our TCAT Chattanooga/Chattanooga State campus. This role equips students with skills and expertise for careers in automation and robotics, with a hands-on learning environment and curriculum development opportunities.

Position Overview:

Chattanooga State seeks a dedicated Associate Instructor in Industrial Automation and Robotics to join our team at the Chattanooga campus. You will lead students through rigorous technical instruction and practical applications, collaborate on curriculum enhancements, mentor students in career planning, and contribute to workforce development within the local community.

Essential Functions include holistic student support, teaching excellence, program innovation, fiscal stewardship, and contributing to organizational culture and accreditation processes.

Responsibilities
  • Advise and mentor students on career pathways in automation and robotics, including certifications and technical specializations based on interests and industry demand.
  • Provide personalized academic support with instruction on problem-solving, real-time system diagnostics, and precision control in automated systems.
  • Support job placement through industry connections, resume development, interview preparation, and sourcing internships or apprenticeships.
  • Facilitate student engagement in competitive programs and professional societies to reinforce proficiency and leadership.
  • Deliver in-depth lectures and hands-on lab training on topics from basic mechanical and fluid power systems to PLCs, robotics integration, industrial networking, VFDs, and automated control systems.
  • Evaluate student understanding through assessments and project-based learning; maintain progress records.
  • Design and refine course modules incorporating Industry 4.0, IIoT, and data-driven automation; select technical resources; lead syllabus development; integrate virtual labs and simulations; utilize the college LMS.
  • Participate in program advisory committees and strengthen partnerships with regional businesses and community stakeholders.
  • Assist with budgeting for lab equipment and safety compliance; ensure equipment reflects current industry standards.
  • Support accreditation and compliance activities and engage with industry organizations and conferences to enhance instructional methodologies.
  • Pursue ongoing training and certifications in relevant technical fields, including AI in robotics and advanced motion control.
  • Execute other responsibilities to uphold the college’s mission and standards in technical education.
Qualifications

Education and Technical Expertise

  • Completion of a one-year diploma or associate’s degree in Industrial Maintenance, Mechatronics, Robotics, or Industrial Electricity, OR completion of a USDOL registered apprenticeship in mechanical or electrical maintenance.
  • Hands-on experience in automation and industrial maintenance; at least three years as a maintenance technician or licensed (journeyman) electrician with an LLE certification, or ten years of expertise in industrial automation, robotics, or electrical systems.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and familiarity with digital tools for technical documentation and presentations.

Technical Skills and Knowledge

  • Proficiency with mechanical systems, hydraulics, pneumatics, motor controls; experience with PLCs and HMIs.
  • Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills in automated environments; knowledge of sensors, actuators, industrial control software, and data acquisition systems.
  • Familiarity with NFPA 70E and OSHA safety standards; willingness to obtain NCCER and related NC3 certifications.

Instructional and Curriculum Development Skills

  • Ability to design training modules aligned with industry standards; experience with LMS for online delivery, assessment, and material distribution.
  • Experience with virtual labs, online simulations, and courseware for both in-person and remote learning.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Teaching experience in technical courses with hands-on lab focus.
  • Proficiency with PLCs, HMIs, robotic systems, servo/stepper motors, VFDs, and networked automation protocols (e.g., Modbus, Ethernet/IP).

Salary

Salary Range: $55,983 - $67,181. Salary is commensurate with experience and aligned with Tennessee Board of Regents guidelines.
