Job Summary

A certified healthcare provider employed by Erlanger Health is responsible for direct and/or indirect care of patients under the direction of an RN, LPN, physician, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant. The medical assistant assists in the delivery of health care for patients per their scope of practice, in the ambulatory areas of Erlanger.

Education & Certifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Completion of an accredited or governed medical assistant program, or military equivalent training
  • BLS certification (completed prior to assignment)
  • Clinical Medical Assistant certification
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous medical assistant experience
  • Phlebotomy skills
  • Advanced disease specialty certifications (e.g., Orthopedics 4h annually, Stroke 1h, Spine 2h)
Responsibilities
  • Check schedules and organize patient flow
  • Accompany patients to exam/procedure rooms and assist with transfers, dressing, specimen collection, and patient history
  • Perform screenings per provider guidelines
  • Assist providers/nurses with procedures, charting, and relaying instructions to patients/families
  • Answer calls and provide pertinent information
  • Send/receive medical records and obtain lab/x‑ray reports, hospital notes, and referral information
  • Complete forms, requisitions, and schedules
  • Verify insurance coverage and patient demographics; manage and update charts
  • Schedule appointments, review basket messages, and maintain chart completeness
  • Set up instruments and equipment per department protocols; clean rooms and maintain infection control
  • Run quality controls on equipment and document logs (refrigerator, sample, quality control)
  • Order, sort, and restock supplies; restock exam/procedure rooms as needed
  • Respect patient rights, respond to emergency codes, and communicate concerns to supervisor
