The Surgical Technologist is a specifically trained scrub technologist who, under the direction of a Registered Nurse, serves as a vital member of the OR team, responsible for direct and indirect care of the surgical patient.

• High School education or equivalent.

• Maintain certification as a surgical technologist from a national certifying body recognized by the Health Facilities Commission, or obtain such certification no later than 18 months after completing a surgical technology program.
• Have documented evidence of surgical technology training through the U.S. Armed Forces, National Guard, or U.S. Public Health Service, if not certified.
• Be recognized by the State of TN.
• Complete Basic Life Support (BLS) prior to starting in the unit/department and maintain it thereafter.
• Display knowledge of patient care appropriate to the age of the patients served, including assessment of the patient's status and interpretation of age‑specific needs.

The Surgical Technologist functions as a member of the surgical team responsible for obtaining surgical supplies, preparing the surgical field, and maintaining procedure sterility. The technologist works in collaboration with medical, anesthesia, managerial, nursing, and clinical staff to ensure optimal patient outcomes. The technologist must demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary for age‑appropriate care and contribute to departmental objectives through support of the philosophy and procedures.
