DescriptionA Certified Medical Technologist performs a wide variety of laboratory procedures that require independent judgment and utilize both manual and automated methods. The role requires a bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or a related biological science and 12 months of approved clinical training from a NACCLS‑approved program, or an equivalent military training qualification for those with an associate’s degree. Candidates must hold an MT/CLS (ASCP) certification or its equivalent, and a state of Tennessee licensure as a Medical Laboratory Technologist is preferred.
Employees hired prior to December 2016 who have not yet met these requirements are grandfathered into the position.
The Medical Technologist performs chemical, microscopic, and bacteriological testing of body fluids to obtain data for the diagnosis and treatment of disease under the direction of a Coordinator. The individual works closely with the Coordinator and other Technicians/Technologists in an atmosphere of continuous quality improvement. Duties are as assigned by a Coordinator, Clinical Lab Manager, and/or Administrative Laboratory Director. The employee must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her section.
He/she must assess data reflecting patient status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to their age‑specific needs and to deliver the care required as described in the unit's policies and procedures.
