A registered professional nurse employed by Erlanger Medical Center. The Medical Call Center nurse is responsible for the indirect care of patients through information given telephonically.
Education- Required:
Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing - Preferred: N/A
- Required:
Knowledge of general nursing principles and practice skills; knowledge of organizational functions, policies and regulation; knowledge of current trends and new developments; knowledge of principles and practices of nursing applicable to those areas requiring special education. Computer and keyboard skills required. Three years experience in pediatrics. - Preferred:
Pediatric settings: ambulatory, medical/surgical unit, emergency room or urgent care, public health pediatric nursing.

Current licensure to practice nursing in the state of Tennessee. - Preferred:
The Tennessee nursing license will be a single state license for Tennessee residents or non‑compact state residents. Tennessee licensure or multi‑state licensure from a compact state must be obtained within three months of hire for non‑Tennessee residents.
The employee must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary to assess the level of urgency of health care by phone utilizing a computerized LVM algorithm system for telephone triage, evaluate problems and symptoms, select appropriate guidelines or protocols, determine urgency level for advice, implement and evaluate plans of care, and apply the principles of growth and development over the life span.
The individual must be able to interpret patient data, identify age‑specific needs, recommend pharmacological medications per physician standing orders or approved protocols, accurately place phone prescriptions to pharmacies when appropriate, and operate office equipment required for documentation and electronic chart transmission while adhering to confidentiality policies.
Evaluation of abilities is performed by the call center manager through direct observation, audits of call recordings, periodic chart audits, daily reports from the LVM program, and verbal or written discussions. Competency can also be evaluated by objective criteria that are reviewed and validated.
