Overview
The Emergency Department at Broomfield Hospital currently has 17 consultant posts and this advertisement is to expand to 18 posts. The department sees over 140 000 patients each year, of which 25% are children and young people. The individual should be committed to providing excellent shop floor coverage to enhance patient care and support the more junior staff. We are a friendly department with a stable workforce, many of whom have remained in the department for years.
We are committed to fully treating the patient prior to specialty referral and have policies such as adult and paediatric sedation in place to do so. We have our own departmental Ultrasound machines with many of our doctors trained and experienced in their use. The CT scanner is adjacent to the department and the Emergency Team are fully involved with stroke patients undergoing thrombolysis 24/7.
We have regular consultant meetings as well as teaching and audit meetings which involve all of the staff in the ED to share information and gather feedback and ideas.
- Provide shop floor coverage 18 hours a day, inclusive of weekends and bank holidays.
- Work with other members of the Emergency Medicine Team to provide first‑class clinical care in adult and paediatric emergency medicine.
- Run and deliver Rapid Assessment and Treatment (RAT) and supervise/teach junior medical staff.
- Take an appropriate share of the management and administrative workload of the department.
- Ensure more consistent cover of the ambulatory/RAT shifts (0900–1700 and 1700–2300) and maintain day EPIC shifts and on‑call cover at a ratio of 1 in 16.
- Engage in planning and developing the service, contributing to the Trust’s new model for delivering emergency care.
