Consultant in Emergency Medicine

The Emergency Department at Broomfield Hospital currently has 17 consultant posts and this advertisement and recruitment is to expand to 18 posts.

The department sees over 140,000 patients each year, of which 25% are children and young people.

The individual should be committed to providing excellent shop floor coverage to enhance patient care and support the more junior staff. We are friendly department with a stable workforce, many of whom have remained in the department for years.

We are committed to fully treating the patient prior to specialty referral and have policies such as adult and paediatrics sedation in place to do so. We have our own departmental Ultrasound machines with many of our doctors trained and experienced in its use. The CT scanner is adjacent to the department and the Emergency Team are fully involved with stroke patients undergoing thrombolysis 24/7.

We have regular consultant meetings as well as teaching and audit meetings which involve all of the staff in the ED to share information and gather feedback and ideas.

Main duties of the job

As a Consultant Emergency Physician, you will be expected to work with other members of the Emergency Medicine Team to provide first class clinical care in Adult and Paediatric Emergency Medicine.

You will provide clinical leadership, including running and delivering RAT (Rapid Assessment and Treatment) and supervision/teaching of junior medical staff. RAT has been implemented as part of a new model for delivering emergency care at the Trust that takes a whole system approach.

Currently Emergency Medicine consultants provide shop floor cover 18 hours a day, inclusive of weekends and Bank holidays. However, due to changes in individual job plans and less than full time working there are unfilled shifts in the rota. The aim is to ensure more consistent cover of the Ambulatory/RAT shifts which are  and  and ensure the day EPIC shifts and on call cover is maintained at 1 in 16.

The post-holder will be expected to take an appropriate share in the management and administrative workload of the Department. Consultant engagement in planning and developing the service is valued.

Person Specification Medical
  • GMC Registration
  • Extensive Experience with in Emergency Care at Consultant Level
  • Entry on GMC Specialist Register; eligible for entry on Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of training (CCT) at time of interview
  • Evidence of completion of specialist training or equivalent
  • EPIC experience
Experience
  • Experience Running Department as EPIC
  • Comprehensive knowledge in the specialty and ability to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems.
  • Demonstrates good knowledge of the structures and culture of the NHS, roles, responsibilities and relationships across the MDT and the multi-professional team
  • Able to take full and independent responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision
  • Broad knowledge and experience of Emergency Medicine in the UK
