This is an as and when role where, depending on service demand, you will be expected to work a minimum of two days per week. You will also be required to work some weekends and evenings, providing support to the service at key times. You must be able to travel county wide.
The Role
Essex County Council (ECC) is one of the largest and most dynamic local authorities in the UK, serving a population of 2 million residents, and has a very successful track record of delivering transformational change. ECC anticipated change was needed in the public sector and has worked to deliver better quality at lower cost. We have an ambitious transformation agenda - one with the scope to reach every part of the council.
We are changing the way we think, the way we work, and the ways in which we deliver our services. We are committed to becoming a place where individuals, partners and communities feel proud to play their role and genuinely want to belong. We're immensely proud of our flexible working options.
The Opportunity
We are currently seeking competent individuals who are passionate about cycling and enjoy working with people-especially children-and who are enthusiastic about sharing their cycling skills. In this role, you will be delivering Bikeability training courses to children across Essex, as well as occasionally working with adults to help them build confidence, develop practical cycling skills, and improve their road awareness.
As part of the role, you will be expected to always adhere to road safety laws, just as you would in your everyday cycling. You will be responsible for planning and organising training sessions effectively, demonstrate reliability and good timekeeping, and maintain a strong awareness of potential hazards. Cycling experience, confidence and skill are all essential, along with the ability to create a safe, supportive learning environment for both children and adults.
You will be delivering valuable, lifelong cycling skills that will empower our learners to travel confidently, safely, and independently.
To prepare you for this role, you will receive training to the National Standard through a three‑day course delivered by The Bikeability Trust.
If your application is successful, you must be available to attend the full three‑day course from 29th , 30th April & 1st May 2026 (inclusive). The venue will be confirmed closer to the time. This qualification includes online modules that must be completed before attending the in‑person training days.
You will also be required to achieve full accreditation in the 1st4sport Level 2 Award in Instructing Cycle Training within 12 months of starting employment (funded by ECC).
