Mentor (1:1 SEMH Support) - Chelmsford
Hourly Rate: £25-£30 (dependent on experience)

Flexible – up to 30 hours per week | Term-time only
Make a Difference Where It Matters Most
AP Education is working in partnership with local authorities to deliver bespoke 1:1 Alternative Provision for children and young people who are unable to access mainstream education. We are currently seeking an experienced 1:1 SEMH Mentor to support learners in Chelmsford and surrounding areas.
This role is ideal for professionals with backgrounds in counselling, psychology, SEMH, or therapeutic support who are passionate about working 1:1 with vulnerable young people.
Learner Needs You Will SupportYou will work with children and young people presenting with complex needs, including (but not limited to):
- SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs)
- EBSA (Emotionally Based School Avoidance)
- Autism
- ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences)
- Trauma‑related behaviours and anxiety
- SpLD / MLD
- Provide face‑to‑face 1:1 SEMH support for learners from Early Years to KS4
- Deliver SEMH‑focused interventions, wellbeing support, and confidence‑building activities
- Build strong, trusting relationships using trauma‑informed and relational approaches
- Support emotional regulation, engagement, and positive behaviour strategies
- Implement consistent, patient, and positive behaviour management approaches
- Complete baseline emotional and engagement assessments to inform personalised support plans
- Produce clear daily/weekly progress notes and reports
- Liaise with multi‑agency professionals (e.g. CAMHS, Social Workers, SALT, OT) where required
- Support learners with transitions into specialist or mainstream education settings
- Manage attendance and session reporting through AP Education systems
This role requires experience supporting children or young people with SEMH needs. Applicants should have experience in one or more of the following:
- SEMH or behavioural support roles
- Counselling or therapeutic settings
- Psychology or assistant psychologist roles
- Mental health or wellbeing support within education or youth services
- Therapeutic youth work or alternative provision
- Proven experience working 1:1 with learners with SEMH needs
- Strong understanding of trauma‑informed practice
- Calm, compassionate, and emotionally resilient approach
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with professionals
- (QTS or HLTA not required.)
