Communications Specialist

City Manager's Office
Temporary - 19 hours per week
Rate: $40/hour - $45/hour

POSITION SUMMARY: The Communications Specialist supports the City of Chelsea’s communications efforts by creating engaging, accessible content that raises awareness of City services and programs. This role has a particular focus on elevating the profile of the Department of Public Works through digital and print media, while also supporting broader communications initiatives across the organization.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and design content for the City’s digital and print communications, with emphasis on highlighting Department of Public Works employees, services, projects, events and initiatives
  • Create social media content in collaboration with the City’s Social Media Content Developer, leading content development for the City’s Traffic Advisory Facebook page
  • Produce the City’s weekly newsletter, “City Hall News”, in collaboration with the Communications & Community Engagement Manager
  • Capture, edit, and produce photography and video for digital storytelling
  • Write and publish content in English and Spanish to ensure broad community access
  • Coordinate with City departments to promote programs, events, and services
  • Maintain digital content calendars and ensure consistent messaging across channels
  • Support the Communications & Community Engagement Manager with additional projects and duties, including public relations efforts, as needed
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, journalism, public relations, or related field; or equivalent experience
  • 2+ years of experience managing social media for an institution, government entity, or brand
  • Demonstrated proficiency with content creation and design tools (e.g. Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, video editing software)
  • Strong writing and editing skills with attention to detail
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with accessibility standards and inclusive communication practices, or willingness to learn
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and collaborate across department
