Toolroom Team Leader

Location:

Cheltenham, Gloucestershire

We are looking for a skilled and proactive Tool Room Team Leader to oversee the production, maintenance and improvement of tooling and ancillary equipment used in the manufacture, assembly and testing of the Spirax Sarco product range. This is a hands‑on leadership role where you will supervise a team of Toolroom engineers, drive high standards across the department, manage tool orders and maintenance schedules, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives supporting efficiency, quality and reliability across operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise Toolroom staff, allocating work and ensuring effective team performance.
  • Maintain excellent housekeeping and uphold high 5S standards across the Toolroom.
  • Ensure all activities are fully compliant with H & S regulations and company procedures.
  • Support and contribute to the Production Engineering strategy and departmental KPIs.
  • Manage all aspects of tool orders, including breakdowns, planned maintenance and general tooling work, ensuring timely completion and job closure.
  • Oversee subcontractor activities, ensuring quality and compliance.
  • Drive proactive backlog management and effective planning.
  • Actively support engineering and production projects, providing specialist tooling input.
  • Maintain cost awareness and support effective budget control.
  • Identify, lead and support CI and reliability initiatives using recognised improvement tools.
  • Promote problem‑solving, root cause analysis and structured improvement across the team.
Your Experience
  • Demonstrable experience in leading or supervising a team.
  • Strong problem‑solving ability with a practical, analytical approach.
  • Experience working with MRP systems; JD Edwards/E1 or similar is an advantage.
  • Understanding of EHS requirements and compliance in an engineering environment.
  • Experience working on engineering or manufacturing projects.
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
Qualifications & Technical Knowledge
  • Experience using and applying Continuous Improvement tools (Six Sigma, 5 Whys, etc.).
  • Supervisory, management or team leader qualification (desirable).
  • Time‑served engineer with a multi‑skilled mechanical apprenticeship, minimum ONC or equivalent NVQ.
  • Proven experience in tool and fixture manufacture, including press tools.
  • Strong knowledge of Manufacturing Engineering principles.
  • Experience manufacturing tools, jigs and work‑holding equipment using both CNC and conventional methods.
Your Skills
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to engage and influence across functions.
  • Experience in team development, coaching and performance management.
  • Highly organised with strong time‑management skills.
  • Analytical problem‑solving capability with a practical mindset.
  • Ability to conduct risk assessments and ensure safe working practices.
