As an inspector your job will be varied, and you are likely to undertake a range of roles across the sector; from regulating the construction of new nuclear build to the decommissioning of legacy facilities. Some inspectors concentrate on undertaking planned and reactive inspections on site, while others will assess safety submissions or manage discrete intervention projects. Additionally, there may be opportunities to conduct investigations, manage research projects and mentor and develop the next generation of inspectors.

Our Leadership and Management for Safety (LMFS) inspectors deal with organisational and cultural factors that impact on safety at nuclear facilities. A key part of the role involves advising and guiding licensees and duty holders to develop and maintain adequate organisational capability and a positive nuclear safety culture. This includes searching out lessons for regulators and licensees from diverse sources, wider than the nuclear sector, and understanding how to interpret these and take them forward.

Licensing work is integrated with LMFS, as having the appropriate organisational capability is essential for both new and existing licensees. This process involves engaging with prospective licensees from early engagement through to the granting of licenses for a variety of new facilities, such as reactors and fuel cycle installations. It also includes working with current licensees on matters related to replacement licenses and delicensing.

ONR’s activities in this area are dynamic and diverse, focusing on maintaining a consistent yet proportionate approach to licensing projects by collaborating closely with both internal and external stakeholders. The work entails guiding prospective licensees on licensing and other legal requirements, as well as assessing and scrutinising licence applications alongside specialists from other disciplines.

None currently, however, at this level there could be an expectation to manage staff in the future.

We expect all Nuclear Safety Inspectors to have:

• Degree level qualification or equivalent in a related discipline or the ability to demonstrate performance and experience at an equivalent professional level;
• Chartered membership of a relevant professional institution, or the ability to demonstrate performance and/or experience at an equivalent professional level.

• A good understanding of how organisational and cultural factors can impact nuclear safety, including lessons learned from past events;
