We are looking for a Project Accountant to support a £60m Capital Programme for Gloucestershire Hospitals. The role delivers financial support to capital projects, develops long‑term capital financial plans and provides financial reporting on capital assets. The successful candidate will build relationships with finance and non‑finance staff and support the capital plan delivery.
Main Responsibilities- Provide financial management services for the Trust’s annual capital programme, including monthly financial impact reporting, variance analysis and forecasting.
- Prepare budget, expenditure and forecast journals; review ledger entries for accuracy and compliance with accounting standards.
- Work closely with project leads to investigate, summarise and challenge variances, identifying causes and supporting A/P and A/R payments.
- Produce and circulate budget statements and progress reports to project leads and budget holders.
- Assist in asset valuation, depreciation forecast and fixed‑asset register maintenance.
- Provide financial advice to managers and senior managers on business cases, accounting treatments (including IFRS
16) and governance processes. - Ensure compliance with Trust financial policies, standing financial instructions and standing orders; raise escalations when necessary.
- Respond to audit requirements and support internal and external audit cycles.
- Run depreciation processes and month‑end close for fixed‑asset register.
- AAT qualified or confirmed Intermediate Level 3 AAT or higher, or an Accountancy degree.
- 5 GCSEs (including Maths and English, Grade 4/Grade C or above).
- Studying or intending to study for a CCAB qualification.
- Advanced knowledge and high proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
- Excellent numeracy and accuracy skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
- Knowledge of budgetary control systems and procedures.
- Good technical working knowledge of the NHS financial regime.
- Accountancy and financial management reporting experience within a large organisation.
- Experience in a finance department of an NHS trust or similar large body.
- Capital accounting experience to include relevant accounting standards.
- Analytical skills with large, complex datasets.
- Excellent organisational and time‑management skills.
- Strong prioritisation and deadline management.
- Methodical, practical and detail‑oriented.
- Team player who can also work independently.
- Proactive and takes initiative.
- Commitment to NHS core values and Trust values.
- Willingness to learn new procedures, processes and systems.
