You will be part of our team of clinical imaging assistants working closely with radiographers, consultant radiologists and surgeons and other healthcare professionals. The role is busy, varied and rewarding.

The skills, experience and knowledge required for this role are sound demonstrable educational background and qualifications, good IT skills, experience of working or volunteering in a public service sector. Experience of working or volunteering within a healthcare setting would be beneficial.

You will be committed to providing safe, caring and accessible care to patients. You will enjoy being part of a highly professional and diverse team. Flexibility and adaptability to change in a fast paced working environment. You will have a good understanding of health and safety, patient confidentiality, discretion and trustworthiness. Physical dexterity, co-ordination and sensory skills will be essential in supporting radiographers with positioning patients for their scan.

You will be reliable and a good attitude towards attendance and punctuality.

Main duties of the job

Your day-to-day duties will include:

  • preparing patients for examination and accompanying patients to and from scanner rooms
  • providing reassurance to patients
  • carrying out patient safety screening checks
  • making sure the working environment is clean and hygienic
  • helping to maintain equipment and reporting any faults
  • assisting radiographers and radiologists with procedures
  • clerical tasks such as data input, image transfer, ordering stock of consumable items

Shifts will involve working variable days over a 7-day week, (mix of shifts 11.5hrs, 8hrs and 6hrs by rota with a 30-minute unpaid break) based on rotation at Cheltenham Imaging Centre and Gloucester Community Diagnostic Centre. Enhancements apply to weekend and bank holiday working.

Part time minimum of 24hpw (2 x 12hr shifts over a 7-day week will be considered).

Job Purpose:

To work as part of the team within the diagnostic imaging services, to include clerical, technical and caring duties as allocated under the direction and supervision of the team lead, manager or superintendent in charge.

To provide support for patients attending the Cheltenham Imaging Centre and Gloucester sites for diagnostic imaging examinations.

Key areas of responsibility will include:

Operational Duties

  • Assisting radiographers and radiologists in imaging procedures
  • Chaperoning patients for intimate examinations, procedures
  • Patient cannulation (training will be provided)
  • Clinical audit
  • Stock control and ordering
  • Preparation of clinical areas
  • Provide physical and emotional support to patients throughout their attendance to the Imaging Centre and on the mobile units.
  • Support, welcome and assist friends and relatives accompanying patients to the department.
  • Provide information to patients about their examination and any follow up where necessary.
  • To help patients prepare for an examination including undressing, reassurance and explanation, portering duties for those in wheelchairs or on stretchers.
  • Conducting screening safety checks with patients prior to examination to ensure their suitability for imaging examinations or procedures and to ensure that any contraindications are brought to the immediate attention of the supervising radiographer or line manager.
  • Chaperone patients during examinations where necessary
  • Support the radiographers with the positioning and set up of patients on the scanners, operating safely in accordance with all health and safety policies.
