Position SummaryThis position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit organization committed to strengthening the community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The ECEAP Assistant Teacher promotes an inclusive learning environment for children, where they build lasting and meaningful relationships with their peers, families, and the community.
Essential Functions- Cultivates positive relationships with children, families and coworkers, remaining dedicated to the learning and success of each unique child.
- Supports the Lead Teacher in classrooms by supervising, engaging, and nurturing children in purposeful programming.
- Adheres to ECEAP, Washington State DCYF Licensing, Early Achievers and YMCA standards and follows all procedures and safety standards.
- Assists in the implementation and planning of educational, developmentally appropriate curriculum based on child development and program curriculum.
- Aids in ongoing, systematic observations and evaluations of individual children as required by ECEAP and supports in maintaining required program records as requested by supervisor.
- Maintains program site, equipment and classroom cleanliness and organization to ensure a well‑prepared learning environment.
- Attends and engages with staff and participants in family nights, program activities, staff meetings, and staff training.
- Demonstrates the Four Character Development Principles of the YMCA—Caring, Honesty, Respect, Responsibility—through action and interaction with staff, participants and the public.
- Must have, or be willing to receive, an Early Childhood Education Certificate within 5 years of hire.
- Previous experience working with children in a developmental, diverse setting.
- Ability to plan, organize and implement age‑appropriate/developmentally appropriate program activities.
- Required prior to first day:
Negative TB test within the past six months, MMR vaccination. - Required on the first day:
Registration in DCYF MERIT, Blood Borne Pathogens training, application for a portable background check. - Required within 30 days of hire:
Child Abuse Prevention training, First Aid/CPR certification, Food Handlers Permit, 30 hours basic training or educational exemption. - Understands that the YMCA is a public accommodation committed to inclusion and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
- Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from diverse backgrounds.
- Indicates that the training is free or YMCA‑sponsored.
- Physical demands include regular exposure to communicable diseases, requiring frequent handwashing and use of disinfectants.
- Employee will frequently lift and carry children and engage with them in stationary and upright positions.
- Employee may be exposed to chlorine when in the pool or pool area.
- Specific vision abilities required: close and distance vision.
- Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
