Eastern Washington University’s College of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (CSTEM) seeks an Electron Microscope Technician 3, Project to support a new electron microscopy laboratory funded by an extramural NSF grant.
Job SummaryThe Technician will provide advanced technical support for research, education, and outreach activities. Responsibilities include training users, establishing protocols for sample preparation and electron microscopy analysis, tracking inventory, maintaining instruments, and ensuring laboratory safety. The role serves as a technical consultant to faculty and investigators, develops new procedures, and directs laboratory operations.
Key Responsibilities- Perform specimen preparation, sample coating, and scanning electron microscopy procedures.
- Train new users in safe operation of the electron microscope and related equipment.
- Consult with faculty and investigators on diagnostic problems and research projects.
- Develop and implement new procedures, conduct literature searches, and adapt techniques to research needs.
- Track inventory levels, place replenishment orders, and purchase laboratory consumables and equipment.
- Maintain workload recording system and prepare instrument use reports.
- Recruit, hire, train, schedule, and supervise student workers when applicable.
- Observe Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act and university safety rules.
- Oversee operation and maintenance of the electron microscope; make minor repairs and determine service needs.
- Purchase and install high‑pressure gas cylinders on applicable equipment.
- Track use of the electron microscopy lab, prepare invoices, and report usage to SEM users.
- Assist with preparation of instrument reports and routine equipment checks.
- Interact with facilities staff to resolve plumbing, HVAC, electrical, and other infrastructure issues.
- Coordinate with Environmental Health and Safety staff on hazardous waste storage and labeling.
- Prepare semi‑annual HAPs and VOCs reports for the laboratory.
- Bachelor’s degree in a science‑related field (chemistry, biology, geology, physics, environmental science, or related discipline) plus at least two years of experience in an electron microscopy laboratory, or equivalent education and work experience.
- Demonstrated ability to support diverse users and ensure universal access to laboratory resources.
- B.S. or M.S. in biology, chemistry, geosciences, physics, environmental science, engineering, or a related field.
- Experience working in a research laboratory.
- Proficiency with transmission or scanning electron microscopy.
- Teaching or training experience.
- Excellent interpersonal and service‑oriented communication skills.
- Strong computer and record‑keeping abilities.
- Clear written and verbal communication.
- Flexibility and willingness to learn new technologies.
- Self‑directed work ethic and team‑player capability.
- Time‑management skills to complete tasks on schedule.
Annual salary range: $30,678 (minimum) to $34,698 (maximum). This is a half‑time, 20‑hour per week, two‑year and eight‑month project position funded by an NSF grant.
