About the Role
The Sourcing Manager (Handlooms) will serve as the technical bridge between traditional handloom craftsmanship and modern textile engineering, ensuring efficient, sustainable, and high-quality fabric production. The role involves end-to-end technical oversight of handloom operations, supervision of handlooms, and leadership in process optimization, product development, quality assurance, and green innovation within the handloom ecosystem.
Key Responsibilities
Process Planning & Optimization
Plan, guide, and supervise warping and sizing operations, ensuring yarn strength, consistency, and suitability for handloom weaving.
Oversee drafting and denting processes to achieve required fabric density, weave structure, and design accuracy.
Assist in loom preparation, setting, and adjustment, including installation and optimization of dobby (and jacquard, where applicable) mechanisms.
Ensure loom readiness and technical consistency across all operating looms.
Handloom Production Management & Supervision
Supervise daily production across handlooms, ensuring adherence to production plans and quality standards.
Provide technical guidance to handloom weavers on issues related to yarn tension, thread breakage, pattern execution, and loom behavior.
Balance productivity improvement with preservation of handcrafted quality and authenticity.
Product Development & Innovation (R&D Focus)
Translate design concepts into technical weave plans, including preparation of graph paper layouts and dobby / jacquard design inputs.
Support fabric development for plain and dobby woven fabrics, including trials, sampling, and design refinement.
Analyze and select suitable fibers and yarns (cotton, silk, wool, linen, blends) based on fabric performance, sustainability, and end use.
Introduce new weaving techniques, tools, or process improvements that enhance efficiency while retaining handloom character.
4. Quality Control & Assurance
Inspect fabrics for weaving defects such as broken ends, uneven picks, faulty patterns, shade variation, and finishing defects.
Implement root-cause analysis and corrective actions to prevent recurrence of defects.
Supervise post-weaving and finishing processes, including cleaning, finishing, and pressing/calendaring where applicable.
Conduct raw material inspections, ensuring yarn strength, shade accuracy, and colorfastness prior to loom issuance.
5. Sustainability & Green Technology Integration
Promote use of eco-friendly fibers, natural yarns, low-impact dyes, and sustainable auxiliaries in handloom production.
Identify opportunities for waste reduction, energy efficiency, water conservation, and responsible material usage.
Ensure traditional handloom processes remain environmentally responsible and market relevant.
6. Technical & Cost Control Support
Monitor and manage environmental conditions (humidity and temperature) in the weaving shed to optimize yarn and fabric performance.
Estimate and analyze cost of production, including yarn consumption, labor input, and process efficiency.
Maintain technical documentation related to processes, trials, quality findings, and improvements.
