Overview
This is a permanent Consultant position in Obstetrics and Gynaecology with a special interest in Benign Gynaecology. The successful candidate will contribute to both Obstetrics and Gynaecology, including general gynaecology clinics, gynaecology theatres, outpatient hysteroscopy clinics, and a general high risk antenatal clinic. The role also involves Labour Ward, Obstetrics and Gynaecology on‑calls, Emergency Gynaecology and Elective Caesarean section lists, and wider departmental responsibilities such as Governance, Leadership and Education.
QualificationsApplicants must have full GMC registration, be CCT qualified (or within 6 months of obtaining it), and be on the specialist register. Candidates should be willing and able to participate in the non‑resident Obstetrics on‑call rota.

Responsibilities- Deliver Clinical, Educational, Managerial Services of the highest professional standard at Consultant Level to the Department
- Deliver Direct Clinical Care to patients, through all parts of the Department assisting clinical decision‑making and sharing equally in the workload
- Provide consultant cover in ward rounds, multi‑disciplinary team meetings, clinics, theatre time
- Consultants will be expected to review all potential admissions and develop rapid assessment triage strategies to ensure early investigations and disposition of patients is achieved
- Have a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge, ensuring safe handover as appropriate
- Engage fully with the care of patients outside the department and provide a prompt opinion on request from consultant colleagues in other specialties
- Engage with medical, nursing, management and all relevant co‑workers in the delivery of department objectives
- Actively participate in and support other staff with education, research, audit and clinical governance activities
- Participate in the professional training of the staff in the department
- Support recruitment, appraisal, development and mentoring activities to a multi‑disciplinary, multi‑professional team
- Undertake any other duties appropriate for a consultant

The Job Plan is based on 8.5 PAs of Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 1.5 Supporting Professional Activities (SPA) organised on a 16‑week rota. The rota allows consultants to alternate busy and less busy days to equalise workloads. A specific job plan will be agreed with the appointed consultant and reviewed annually. Every 16 weeks the consultant’s regular activities are replaced by ‘Consultant of the week’ duties (9‑5 pm Mon‑Fri) covering gynae emergencies, gynae inpatients, gynae hot clinic, antenatal inpatients, and maternity day assessment unit.
Friday night on‑call is 1:16 weeks;
Saturday and Sunday on‑call is also 1:16 weeks (on‑site 8‑5 pm then off‑site until 8 am).
Other duties include day‑surgery unit (Ashford), antenatal clinic at SPH or ASH, main theatres at SPH or ASH, elective Caesarean at SPH, labour ward at SPH, gynae outpatient clinic (SPH or local provider), outpatient hysteroscopy clinic at SPH, departmental gynaecology referral triage, and flexible session types aligned with departmental pressures and applicant skill set.
