Deputy Sister/Charge Nurse, Birch & CCU

We require demonstrable post‑qualification experience (preferably in a CCU setting). Candidates should possess high levels of acute care skills and a Diploma or Degree in the Coronary Care Course.

You must be able to read ECGs confidently and identify a STEMI, as we are a Primary PCI Centre providing a 24/7 service.

As a multidisciplinary team we value effective teamwork with Clinicians and colleagues within our co‑located Cardiac Catheter Lab. We work closely with neighbouring cardiac units, the outreach team, intensive care colleagues and nursing staff.

The successful post holder will play a key role in delivering safe patient care, ensuring fluent admission and discharge processes, putting patients first and acting as a role model for the team. We encourage continuous improvement and innovative thinking.

Main duties of the job
  • Promote and help manage the delivery of a quality nursing service, setting and monitoring clinical standards.
  • Assess patient care needs and develop, implement and evaluate programmes of care.
  • Act as Team Leader and deputise for the Ward Manager(s) within the framework of team nursing based on internal night rotation, in accordance with the nursing philosophy of Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals NHS Trust.
  • Take lead responsibility for an area of clinical practice appropriate to coronary care with PPCI service, having a Coronary Care course at diploma or degree level, working as part of an acute cardiac team and reading ECGs with confidence.

Job responsibilities Clinical and Professional Responsibilities
  • Support the Ward Manager(s) in leading and supervising safe, high‑standard nursing practice and delivering evidence‑based patient care in accordance with the NMC Code and Trust policies.
  • Assist the Ward Manager(s) in providing and developing good nursing practice in line with department and hospital policy.
  • Assist in establishing, monitoring and evaluating agreed standards of patient care and quality service.
  • Determine nursing care priorities, planning the delivery of care considering staff skill mix.
  • Interpret patients' clinical observations and records, making decisions and planning in areas affecting patient care; report promptly to medical or appropriate staff any matters outside responsibility.
  • Monitor clerical and legal documents completed by ward staff, ensuring accuracy and legibility.
  • Establish effective communication with patients, carers and all multidisciplinary team members.
  • Assist with evaluation projects and assessment of new equipment and technology.
  • Ensure clinical and housekeeping practice follows policies/procedures designed to prevent hospital‑acquired infection.
