Neonatal Assistant

We are looking to recruit a Band 2 Neonatal Assistant to join our neonatal team. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated individual to work in an innovative environment where every team member makes a valuable contribution to patient care.

You will play an important role in supporting the smooth running of the neonatal unit, working closely with the multidisciplinary team to maintain high standards of cleanliness, organisation, and safety.

Responsibilities
  • Cleaning and maintaining neonatal equipment and the clinical environment in line with infection prevention and control policies
  • Stocking and replenishing nurseries and clinical areas
  • Supporting the multidisciplinary team (MDT) to ensure the neonatal unit runs efficiently and safely
  • Undertaking duties appropriate to the role to support patient care and service delivery
  • Being conversant with the Trust and local policies for safe handling, cleaning and maintenance of equipment
  • Ensuring all specialised equipment such as ventilators, incubators and breast pumps are cleaned, assembled and in safe working order
  • Maintaining accurate record keeping on equipment cleaning
  • Reporting any faulty or defective equipment to the nurse in charge
  • Contributing to the development of policies and procedures relating to the equipment
  • Ensuring cleanliness and general tidiness throughout the unit, including nurseries, utility rooms, parent rooms, milk and pharmacy fridges, surfaces and storage areas
  • Keeping stocks maintained within nurseries and informing the nurse in charge when cupboard stocks are low
  • Keeping up to date with laundry and changing Milton solution daily in accordance with daily tasks
  • Maintaining effective communication with the multidisciplinary team and all visitors to the unit
  • Handling collection and removal of laundry and rubbish to and from a pre-determined point on the unit
  • Managing the movement of specimens, x-rays and health records
  • Assisting with clerical and reception duties such as answering the phone and filing
  • Supporting the trained nurse in delegating duties as required
  • Reporting child protection issues and concerns to the nurse in charge
  • Changing suction tubing and containers as per unit guidelines
  • Assisting with cleaning frequent touch surfaces in the clinical environment including Work stations on Wheels (WOW)
  • Answering the telephone in a timely and professional manner and referring calls as appropriate
  • Being aware of current hospital procedures on fire and cardiac arrest and taking appropriate action
  • Communicating with parents and relatives in a courteous, sensitive and appropriate manner
  • Reporting incidents, accidents, concerns, near misses or complaints to the nurse in charge or matron
  • Ensuring communication of a personal and private nature is discreet and patient confidentiality is maintained
  • Providing refreshments for distressed parents as instructed by qualified staff
  • Assisting the trained nurse in escorting babies as required
  • Teaching mothers how to express and safely store breast milk
  • Ensuring that the privacy and dignity of mothers are respected at all times, especially when expressing their milk
Working Hours
  • 37.5 hours per week
  • Monday to Sunday, including bank holidays
  • No night shifts
  • Early and late shifts
  • Shift patterns include 7.5-hour shifts and long days of 11.5 hours
  • Part-time applications will also be considered

The successful candidate will be reliable, organised, and able to work effectively as part of a team, with a commitment to maintaining high standards of cleanliness, infection control, and patient safety.

Qualifications, Experience & Skills
  • Educated to a suitable standard in literacy and numeracy
  • Some experience of working with others and the general public
  • Willing to learn new skills
  • Good communicator and team player
  • IT skills (desirable)
