Staff Nurse, Endoscopy

An opportunity has arisen for nurses with or without relevant experience to join our Endoscopy Unit. We are looking for enthusiastic, independent and committed nurses and support workers. The unit operates from 8am to 7pm, 7 days a week, delivering a high‑quality, patient‑focused service. The role includes participation in out‑of‑hours rota for gastrointestinal bleed, nurse consent, pre‑assessment, non‑endoscopic procedures such as manometry, small bowel and colon capsule endoscopy, breath tests, fibroscan, and specialist procedures including EUS, EBUS, ERCP, spyglass and medical thoracoscopy.

The post holder will provide specialist clinical support and knowledge to patients within the Endoscopy Unit.

Act as an effective role model and demonstrate organisational and leadership skills, acting up for senior staff in their absence in the clinical areas.

Contribute towards developing and maintaining a suitable and stimulating learning environment for the ongoing professional development of staff and students.

Support the Head of Nursing in establishing a good working atmosphere and in making efficient use of staff, supplies and service.

Participate in emergency out‑of‑hours rota.

Develop effective working relationships with patients, carers, relatives and all members of the multidisciplinary team, including locum doctors and nurses from other organisations, product specialists and carers from care homes.

Make an effective contribution to reaching the Trust's vision, strategic objectives and key work programmes.

Provide high quality care to patients attending the Endoscopy Unit and manage relevant areas of practice.

Job responsibilities

PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Maintain awareness of and comply with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct/Scope of Professional Practice, Trust policies, procedures and guidelines. Be aware of current research, actively involved when necessary, and apply it to practice changes when appropriate. Identify personal developmental needs via the Trust Development Review Process and the Knowledge and Skills Framework, and actively participate in Endoscopy and Trust development opportunities.

COMMUNICATION

Ensure accurate record keeping in accordance with NMC standards. Promote effective communication with patients and carers, providing information that enables informed choices and supporting patients during distressing or emotional events.

PERSONAL AND PEOPLE DEVELOPMENT

Under supervision, gain experience and skills in clinical practice, facilitation, teaching and management. Educate patients and carers as required. Participate in staff appraisal, development and in‑service training, and attend mandatory training sessions. Maintain professional awareness in line with CPD requirements. Facilitate teaching for nursing students and others, and act as preceptor/mentor for junior staff.

HEALTH, SAFETY AND SECURITY

Maintain a clean environment conducive to safe practice. Ensure personal competence, safe use of specialised equipment, and awareness of personal limits. Promote safe practice, identify risks, report incidents, administer drugs safely, and adhere to health and safety policies.

SPECIALTY – AREA SPECIFIC JOB REQUIREMENTS

Ensure high standard nursing care, provide technical assistance during diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and follow agreed policies. Lead the Endoscopy team where appropriate, maintain excellent standards of nursing care and interact sensitively with patients, relatives and carers. Work independently within all GI endoscopic procedures, ERCPs, bronchoscopies, admissions and recoveries. Participate in equipment maintenance and data collection, and keep up to date with new equipment and procedures.

ORGANISATIONAL

Co‑ordinate patient admissions, safe discharges, and communication with other wards. Represent the department at meetings, audits, research and projects; assist in running Endoscopy lists, monitoring stocks, reporting incidents, and achieving financial savings. Cover for Deputy Sister/Charge Nurse when required and attend unit meetings.
