Summary
The Physician Assistant is responsible for providing quality care to patients under the supervision of a licensed physician.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe duties and responsibilities described below represent the general tasks performed on a daily basis; other tasks may be assigned.
- Practice medicine within the scope of license, training, and credentialing
- Practice medicine in accordance with current standards of care
- Practice medicine in accordance with the quality criteria adopted by the Medical Staff Bylaws
- Promote a safety‑conscious workplace
- Evaluate and follow up with patients
- Demonstrate the ability to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individual patient care appropriate to the age of the patients served by demonstrating a strong working knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span
- Communicate appropriately with patients of all ages
- Attend required hospital‑wide orientations, meetings, and in‑services
- Demonstrate a commitment to flexible work scheduling when necessary to ensure patient care
- Work a 10‑hour shift on scheduled days (adjustments as needed based on patient care requirements)
- Round on all patients on the list unless specifically directed otherwise in sign‑out or handoff
- Write progress notes on all patients on the list unless specifically directed otherwise in sign‑out or handoff
- Independently see consults if the attending surgeon is otherwise occupied and write consult notes/History and Physicals
- Write orders during or after rounds, or after seeing consults or admissions
- Complete discharge summaries and medication reconciliations when appropriate
- Communicate with the attending surgeon regarding new consults or developments with floor patients during prolonged cases in the OR
- Communicate with floor nurses, hospitalists, consultants, ER providers, PT/OT, and other team members as appropriate to facilitate patient care and disposition
- Assist the ER with timely patient disposition (admitting or deferring to medicine admission as appropriate); if unsure, communicate with the attending surgeon as soon as possible
- Perform procedures independently within the scope of practice after appropriate training and supervision

Education and Experience- Minimum Required
Education:
Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant program with successful completion of the National Certifying Examination administered by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) - Preferred Experience: Two or more years of experience as a Physician Assistant
Applicant must possess a current, unrestricted license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the state where work will be performed (e.g., Commonwealth of Virginia or State of North Carolina), a current DEA certification without restrictions, and current PALS and/or ACLS certification, as applicable.
