Job Description

Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads for 50 years. It has grown from one campus into a regional educational and economic force, enrolling nearly 28,000 students in 2019‑20. The college has four campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, plus additional regional centers and cultural institutions. Tutors support students by clarifying learning objectives and outcomes and enhancing study skills.

This Math Tutor position is located at the Chesapeake Campus.

Functional Responsibilities
  • Meet with students in one‑to‑one, small‑group, drop‑in, or online tutoring format(s) to provide learning assistance in mathematics.
  • Tutor students in basic computer literacy, including accessing student email, creating and saving documents, and navigating Canvas.
  • Help students develop study strategies (textbooks, handbooks, online resources, etc.) for requested tutoring services.
  • Participate in team meetings, tutor‑training sessions, and professional development training.
  • Partner with instructors to offer outreach‑learning opportunities in the classroom and collaborate on course‑relevant workshops.
  • Maintain familiarity with campus resources available to students.
  • Provide a resourceful supply of course‑relevant handouts in learning assistance centers.
  • Demonstrate patience, encouragement, and empathy to students facing difficulty.
  • Assist with additional duties as assigned.
Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned and to assist the agency or state government in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

Required Qualifications
  • Significant knowledge of Pre Calculus I and II, Statistics I, and higher‑level Calculus concepts.
  • Must have earned an “A” or “B” grade in the course(s) for which tutoring will be performed.
  • Effective oral, written, and technical communication skills.
  • Ability to contextualize transferable academic study techniques and learning strategies into collaborative learning sessions.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with FERPA.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Experience providing excellent customer service to people from varying educational, cultural, and social backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated responsibility, reliability, and punctuality.
